Steelers Beat Packers on Final Play. End Losing
Streak

The Steelers kept their
slim playoff hopes alive with some late game heroics against the
Packers. Ben
Roethlisberger rifled a 19 yard strike to Mike Wallace as time expired
to defeat Green Bay. The play looked eerily similar to Santonio Holmes
infamous Super Bowl catch. Mike Wallace was falling out of bounds
but kept both toes narrowly inside the corner of the end zone. The
play was reviewed and the officials confirmed the catch was a touchdown.
Jeff Reed's extra point sealed the 37-36 come from behind win.
Ben Roethlisberger displayed one of his career best performances
by throwing for over 500 yards against the #2 ranked packer defense.
Ben also connected with Mike Wallace in the first quarter to put
the
Steelers up early. The Packers answered repeatedly but trailed by
ten points going into the second half. Then it happened. The strangest
play call in the entire season took
place.
Jeff Reed attempted an onside kick immediately after making a field
goal that gave the Steelers a two point lead. The attempt was decent
but
Ike
Taylor touched the ball before the kick travelled ten yards and the
Packers regained possession. The game announcers were baffled and
many fans did not understand nor like the play call by coach Tomlin.
The Packers took advantage of the field position and
responded with a drive that gave them a six point lead late in the
game. The Steelers head coach would have undoubtedly received a backlash
from the media if not for the soon to follow game winning drive.
The motivating factor of the onside kick most likely stems from the
fourth quarter meltdowns. The Steelers have lost five games this
season after leading in the final minutes. The
win ended the Steelers longest losing streak in more than a decade.
Pittsburgh's slim playoffs hopes will be determined in the final
two weeks of the season. The Steelers will need to defeat Baltimore
and Miami to have any shot at a wild card. The Jets, Jaguars, and
Broncos will also need to lose in order for Pittsburgh to gain
a playoff entry.
