Steelers Missed Chances Lead to Bears Win

Steelers Bears

The Steelers came out firing on all cylinders with a long drive in the first half. Roethlisberger went on a streak of ten straight completions to put the Steelers up early 7-0. The Steelers were driving a second time when Roethlisberger was hit while he was throwing a pass which lead to an interception by the Bears defense. The interception swung the momentum on the side of the home team. Jay Cutler hit Kellen Davis with a six yard pass that capped a 97-yard drive and tied the game at 7-7 just before halftime.

Cutler completed 27 of 38 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. It was a stark contrast to Cutler's disastrous debut at Green Bay when the Packers made the 26-year-old Pro Bowler look like a rookie. The difference was easy to see. While Cutler was quick to leave the pocket at Lambeau Field and forced throws downfield, he remained calm and didn't hesitate turning to checkdown targets instead of repeatedly going deep.

Pittsburgh’s running game improved slightly from last week but neither team really managed a solid running game. The Bears Matt Forte rushed for only 29 yards on 13 carries. The Steelers first round draft pick (2008) Rashard Mendenhall delivered the best run of the afternoon with a 49 yard scamper which put the Steelers deep inside the Bear’s red zone. Alex Brown then sacked Roethlisberger for a nine-yard loss on third down early in the fourth quarter, pushing back Jeff Reed's field goal attempt.

Reed, who entered this season as the 10th-most accurate kicker in NFL history at 82.8 percent, missed from 38 and 43 yards, both wide left.

''I was trying too hard on both kicks,'' Reed said. ''That's what happens to a kicker when you hook them.''

"Of course that's uncharacteristic of him," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "He just kicked the game-winner last week (against Tennessee) in overtime. That's kind of what we are used to. We are not used to what happened today."

"There's no excuse," Reed said. "First of all, I would like to congratulate Robbie. I have been in those shoes plenty of times and I know how great he feels right now, as opposed to how I feel. You know, there's no excuse. I missed two kicks. Basically what it was, I tried too hard on both of them. As a right-footed kicker, you hook 'em. I thought the first one was going to sneak in. I thought the second one ... I didn't give it a chance."

"I am just embarrassed because these guys fight their tails off to win the game, and if there is one player who can single-handedly lose the game, I will take credit for it," Reed said. "I know they have confidence in me. It hurts me because I let them down. ... I let them down twice today."
